CHINESE smartphone maker Xiaomi Inc announced its first in-house designed chipset yesterday, as it works to streamline production, lower prices and gain greater control over handset design to counter the impact of slowing sales.
The Surge S1, deployed in Xiaomi’s newest smartphone, the Mi 5C, is the first chipset — which manages data flow — from the company’s wholly owned chip research subsidiary, Beijing Pinecone Electronics.

“We need to master the core technologies of our industry and tightly integrate the development of our hardware with our software helping us to make even better smartphones,” Xiaomi Chief Executive Officer Lei Jun said.
Xiaomi Mi 5c Specifications
Alongside
Surge S1, Xiaomi also launched Mi 5c in a metal body with a 5.15-inch
display with a resolution of 1080x1920pixels at a pixel density of
428ppi. The headset is powered by the Surge S1 chipset which is coupled
with 3GB of RAM and 64GB inbuilt storage. The smartphone measures 7.09mm
thick and weighs 135g.
Coming
to the camera, the Xiaomi Mi 5c houses a 12-megapixel camera with a
f/2.2 aperture, phase detection autofocus, geo-tagging, touch focus,
face detection, HDR, panorama, and LED flash. There is also an
8-megapixel front camera with a f/2.0 aperture.
Other
key specifications include a 2860mAh battery that supports fast
charging, a fingerprint scanner integrated into the home button. and
dual-SIM support for two Nano SIM cards.
This essentially means that Xiaomi’s devices will get cheaper as it will
not be dependent on other countries to get its processors. The Xiaomi
Mi 5c will come at a price of 1,500 Yuan (around Rs 15,000), while the
Xiaomi Mi 5 costs around 2,700 Yuan. The phone will be launched in China
on March 3.
